Whiting Reunions Robert Whiting

A few years ago I bought a primitive chair at an antique shop in Stillwater, Minnesota. When I inquired about its origins, I was told that it had come from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Detroit Lakes is north of Clitherall. Some of the descendants of the Cutlerites did move to Detroit Lakes and it is possible that they brought some Whiting chairs with them or that Almon Whiting sold his chairs as far north as Detroit Lakes.

This chair has both similarities and differences to my other chairs. Its spindle back is similar to the chair I bought at auction. However, its legs are not as tapered as Whiting chairs usually are. It also has a small decorative finial on each side. When I recently visited the Otter Tail County museum, I did see a rocking chair by Almon Whiting that had similar finials, as well as the decorative knobby type turnings on the spindles. The new chair is shown side by side with two Almon Whiting chairs..
