I have been trying to determine the parentage of George R. Grinnell, so far without success.  My objective is to link him to the original Grinnell, Matthew, who came to the United States and settled in Rhode Island. One of Matthew's descendants is "Pirate Dick" Grinnell (1717-1789).  My grandmother, Frances Grinnell Kirschner, had been told by her father, George C. Grinnell, that there was a pirate in the family.  It is unclear whether or not we are a direct descendant of said pirate. Richard Grinnell was married twice and had five male children by his second wife Comfort Billings. The Grinnell Family Association's website shows no children by Richard and his first wife, Alice Church.  It is conceivable, however, that Richard and Alice had a son who could have been an ancestor of George R. Grinnell. I do not know what George's middle initial stands for but, if it is Richard, that might be a clue that he was descended from Richard Grinnell.

Children of UNKNOWN GRINNELL are:
2.                i.    GEORGE R.2 GRINNELL, b. 1826, Jefferson County, New York; d. 10 Sep 1862, College Hospital, Georgetown, Washington, D.C.
                  ii.    WILLIAM W GRINNELL1,2, b. 26 Mar 1837, Jefferson County, New York3; d. 31 May 1913, Chula Vista, San Diego County, California4.

Notes for WILLIAM W GRINNELL:
Although it cannot be certain that William W. and George R. were brothers, the fact that they enlisted the same day and that they were both born in Jefferson County, New York makes a fairly compelling case as to their relationship.  If not brothers, they could have been cousins.

William is described in the Army of the United States Certificate of Disability for Discharge as 5 feet 3 inches high, dark complexion, blue eyes, brown hair and by occupation when enlisted a farmer.  He was also listed as being born in Watertown, Jefferson County, NY.

William W. Grinnell and George R. Grinnell both enlisted as Privates on 26 October 1861 in Company E, 97th Infantry Regiment, New York on 4 January 1862. George participated in battles at Cedar Mountain, Rappahannock Station, Thoroughfare Gap and the Second Bull Run (Manassas).   William received a disability discharge from Company E, 97th Infantry Regiment, New York on 13 February 1863 in Washington, D.C.  The following is found in his war record, written by the Adjutant General's Office, WAshington, Oct. 22, 1888.

Respectfully returned to the Commissioner of Pensions William W. Grinnell, a Private of Company E, 97 Regiment New York Volunteers.  The charges of desertion of September 6th and 7th 1862 are removed.  He was admitted to Ascension General Hospital, Washington, D.C. September 2 1862 with Febris Intermittent and was returned to duty Nov. 15, 1862, was received at Camp Distribution, Alexandria, Va. November 18, 1862, examined by Medical Boar at Convalescent Camp, VA February 6, 1863, diagnosis; valvular disease of heart and discharged on Surgeon's Certificate of Disability February 13, 1863.

William wrote the following to John C. Black, Washington, D. C. from Clearleaf, Kansas October 5th, 1888.
Dear Sir:
Yours Sept. 18th at hand and in reply to your questions, will state that my present place of residence is Greenleaf, Kan.  My first place of residence after my discharge was Grant, Herkimer Co., NY and from there to Oak Center, Wis and from there to this place where I have lived for the last 20 years.  My occupation while at Grant was light work choring around ? and while at Oak Center I worked on a farm and while here at work for a stage co. taking care of stock and for the last ten years in a livery stable.  My disability. Rheumatism and Piles was contracted in the later part of Aug. 1862 .  Dr. R. Wiggins of Grant, NY first treated me--don't know if Wiggins is alive or not and since being here I have been treated by Dr. Darrow of Waterville, Kan. He is now living and also Dr. Wingigler formerly of this place.  Don't know where he is now and also by Dr. E. Armstrong of this place.  I have been laid up at different times by reason of said disabilities at one particular time while at Grant, NY I was laid up four or five months and while at work for the Stage company was laid up and had to hire my work done and I am doctoring myself once or twice a year.
Yours Respectfully,
Wm W Grinnell

On Dec. 10, 1914 P. H. Martin, Attorney at Law, Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin wrote the Commissioner of Pensions, Washington, D.C. that he was trying to locate William W. Grinnell as he was an heir to a small estate.

William's Civil War pension record lists his disabilities as "rheumatism and piles."  According to Williams' statement, he never married.

William was living in Seattle, King County, Washington in 1890.  He filed a claim on August 23, 1890.

IDAHO FLIERS CRASH, DIE
DUBOISE, Wyo. (UP)--Forest rangers disclosed today that six Army fliers have been killed in the crash of their B-24 bomber against a mountainside in the Washakie national forest in western Wyoming.
C.S. Thornock of the forest service says the wreckage of the plane was found after rangers rushed to the area to fight a small forest fire.
They discovered that the plane had crashed and burned starting the fire.  The blaze was brought under control within a short time.
(Public relations officers at Pocatello, Idaho, said the four-engined bomber was from that base.  It was believed en route there from Casper, Wyo.  Officers said names of crew members would not be released until relatives are notified.)

Liet. Alan Kirschner Killed in Crash
Second War Fatality among Local Men
Lt. Alan Kirschner, U.S. air force, was killed in a bomber crash in Wyoming Saturday, Aug. 14, according to word received in Spring Valley Tuesday through his mother, Mrs. Fred Kirschner of St. Paul.  Alan was nearing the end of his training period as pilot of a heavy bomber in the army air force.
Alan graduated from the Spring Valley high school in 1937.  He was among the first to join the army when the call came for volunteers, and was with the first contingent of men to be sent to Alaska.  While there he became a corporal in the field artillery and was recommended for training as a pilot in the rapidly expanding air force.
He gained his wings and was commissioned a lieutenant in the army air force in February of this year, and at the time of his death was finishing the grueling training necessary to piloting our heavy bombers.
The funeral will be held in St. Paul with burial in the National Cemetery at Fort Snelling.  According to a dispatch in the Milwaukee Journal, eleven men were killed in the crash, one being Alan.  The bomber, flying from the Pocatello, Idaho, air base, plunged to the ground in a remote region in Wyoming near Dubois.  One other plane from the same base crashed on the field killing five men.

Mrs. Upman, Mrs. Art Brooke, Mrs. Katherine Larson, Miss Josie Banks and Bill Powless attended the funeral of Lt. Alan Kirschner at Fort Snelling Monday.  Neil Lillie and Jimmie Noterman with Leo Petan and Keith Brown, of Setuh Hill, and two Plum City boys were pall bearers for Alan.  Mrs. C. W. Lilie of St. Paul served supper to all those who attended the funeral.
