John Kirschner arrived in Waumandee in 1855, from Prussia, Germany and he worked as a farmer and hotel keeper.

That same year a Albert Kirchner from Bangor, Maine also arrived in Waumandee. He too was a farmer and merchant--related?--he dropped the "S" in the spelling of his name.

Obituary; Frederick Kirschner

Frederick Kirschner was born to Katherine and George Kirschner September 26, 1888, at Waumandee, Buffalo County, Wisconsin.
At the age of five with his family he came to Plum City, where he grew to manhood.
September 26, 1917, he married Frances B. Bayless, of St. Paul.  He To them were born two children.
For four years they resided on the John Gamm farm near Plum City, moving in 1922 to the Carpenter farm near Spring Valley, where they lived until 1937, when Fred's failing health compelled them to leave the farm and move to the village.  He suffered for some years with a heart ailment but had been able to be about, and his sudden death from a heart attack early on the morning of March 10 came as a shock to all.
He is survived by his wife and two children - Alan, now en route with the 81st Field Artillery to Anchorage, Alaska, and Marjorie, of Spring Valley;  his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Kirschner, of Plum City;  three sisters - Mrs. George Taminga of Plum City, Mrs. Lloyd Rafferty of Tacoma, Maryland, and Florence Kirschner of Plum City;  two step-sons - Harry Bayless of Spring Valley and Leo Bayless of Kansas City, Mo; besides six nieces and numerous other relatives.  One sister, Mrs. Orville Marsh, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 12, at Plum City, Elder Henry Grundset, of Clear Lake, officiated, with burial in the family lot at the Plum City cemetery.
Mr. Kirschner had a host of friends all through eastern Pierce county, to whom his untimely death brings sorrow.

Notes for LOTTIE CRANE:
According to Millie Solstad, Lottie was "odd" and divorced Fred shortly after the marriage.

Notes for FRANCES BONNIEBELL GRINNELL:
Frances was a poet all of her life.  A poem would come, seemingly out of nowhere, and she would write it down.  She wrote a weekly column for the Spring Valley, Wisconsin Sun newspaper called "Dishpan Reflections of Daily Life."

1906 lived in Duluth with Mr. and Mrs. Lewis West.  Daisy Evangeline Whiting lived with her for awhile there.  Address was 901 E. 4th St.  Frances was engaged to the West's son; I think his first name was George.  While there, she worked at Marshall-Wells Hardware Company, a wholesale hardware store at 251-319 Lake Avenue South.  The building still stands.  The house is on a hill overlooking the city.  The business was a good walk down toward Lake Superior. George West was a photographer.  Frances was to meet him in Milan, Minnesota where they were to be married.  She took a train to Milan, got off and then got back on the train.  Unfortunately, she left her case with many photographs which he had taken of her at the train depot.

From St. Paul City Directories
1909:  Verni C. Bayless, machinist, h. 437 Neill (probable year of their marriage)
(1910:  First in Wolf Creek, Nebraska where Verni worked in depot for Frances' uncle Julian Whiting; then to Grand Forks where Frances' mother Addie Whiting Slattery lived.)

1914:  Verni C. Bayless, clerk 326 Banfil
Mrs. Bonnie, clerk, Lindeke & Warner, 326 Banfil
1915 (this must have been the year of the divorce)  Verni would no longer be living in St. Paul

1916 Mrs. Bonnie Bayless clerk, Lindeke & Warner, res. The Portland

Notes for LT. ALAN FREDRICK KIRSCHNER:
IDAHO FLIERS CRASH, DIE
DUBOISE, Wyo. (UP)--Forest rangers disclosed today that six Army fliers have been killed in the crash of their B-24 bomber against a mountainside in the Washakie national forest in western Wyoming.
C.S. Thornock of the forest service says the wreckage of the plane was found after rangers rushed to the area to fight a small forest fire.
They discovered that the plane had crashed and burned starting the fire.  The blaze was brought under control within a short time.
(Public relations officers at Pocatello, Idaho, said the four-engined bomber was from that base.  It was believed en route there from Casper, Wyo.  Officers said names of crew members would not be released until relatives are notified.)

Liet. Alan Kirschner Killed in Crash
Second War Fatality among Local Men
Lt. Alan Kirschner, U.S. air force, was killed in a bomber crash in Wyoming Saturday, Aug. 14, according to word received in Spring Valley Tuesday through his mother, Mrs. Fred Kirschner of St. Paul.  Alan was nearing the end of his training period as pilot of a heavy bomber in the army air force.
Alan graduated from the Spring Valley high school in 1937.  He was among the first to join the army when the call came for volunteers, and was with the first contingent of men to be sent to Alaska.  While there he became a corporal in the field artillery and was recommended for training as a pilot in the rapidly expanding air force.
He gained his wings and was commissioned a lieutenant in the army air force in February of this year, and at the time of his death was finishing the grueling training necessary to piloting our heavy bombers.
The funeral will be held in St. Paul with burial in the National Cemetery at Fort Snelling.  According to a dispatch in the Milwaukee Journal, eleven men were killed in the crash, one being Alan.  The bomber, flying from the Pocatello, Idaho, air base, plunged to the ground in a remote region in Wyoming near Dubois.  One other plane from the same base crashed on the field killing five men.

Mrs. Upman, Mrs. Art Brooke, Mrs. Katherine Larson, Miss Josie Banks and Bill Powless attended the funeral of Lt. Alan Kirschner at Fort Snelling Monday.  Neil Lillie and Jimmie Noterman with Leo Petan and Keith Brown, of Setuh Hill, and two Plum City boys were pall bearers for Alan.  Mrs. C. W. Lilie of St. Paul served supper to all those who attended the funeral.
