Little is known about Peter Allen except that he came to Onondaga County, NY from Connecticut and settled in or near the town of Fabius in the 1790s. He married Roena Pearce. Nothing more known about her. Known children of Peter and Roena were eight sons, Peter Jr., Daniel, Marvin, Luther, James P., Norman Elisha and Asahel. Peter was a contemporary of Enoch Benedict, also of Fabius. Elisha, son of Peter, and Mercy, daughter of Enoch, were married in February 1831, further linking those two families since two of Mercy's Benedict cousins also married Allens.

Allen and Daniel R. Allen who reside in said territory of Michigan; also James Allen the son of Elisha Allen deceased of the county of Cortland in said state of New York, also Harriet Allen, Roena Allen, Asahel Allen, children of Peter Allen Junior deceased, and two other children of Peter Allen Junior deceased whose names this deponent does not now recollect, who reside in said county of Cattaraugus, hiz (sic) only recl (sic) of kin and heirs at law him surviving; all of whom are of full age except the said Daniel R. Allen, James son of Elisha Allen, Harriet Allen, Roena Allen, Asahel Allen, son of said Peter Allen Junior and the two whose names are not recollected who are minors, under twenty one years of age that said Peter Allen deceased left [effects] in said Onondaga County, that the said Peter Allen deceased died a natural death an instrument in writing purposing to be his last will and testament and by which this deponent and Luther Allen are named as Executors thereof. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF PETER ALLEN
I Peter Allen of Fabius, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, considering the uncertainty of this mortal life, and being of sound mind and memory, do make and publish this my last will and testament in ________ and form following, that is to say, First, I give and bequeath to my sons Luther Allen, Marvin Allen, Asahel Allen, Norman Allen and Daniel Allen, each the sum of three hundred dollars, to be paid to them in one year after my decease; I also give to my son James P. Allen the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars; and to my grandson James Allen (son of my son Elisha Allen deceased) the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars. The same to be paid to my son James P. one year after my decease; and the sum hereby bequeathed to my grandson James to be paid when he shall arrive at the age of twenty one years. I also give to my grand children, the heirs of my son Peter Allen deceased, the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars, to be divided equally among them when they shall arrive at the age of twenty one years.
The residue of my property that I may be in possession of at my decease, It is my will and desire that all my debts and funeral charges shall be paid out of the Same, and the residue to be divided among my sons, Luther Allen, Marvin Allen, Asahel Allen, Norman Allen, Daniel Allen and James P. Allen and my grand son James Allen, and my grand children, the heirs of my son Peter Allen deceased, in the same proportion as the above bequests to them severally.
The properties that may be going to my sons shall be paid to them in the year after my decease, and the proportion that may be going to my grand children above named to be paid to them when they shall arrive at the age of twenty one years.
Lastly I do constitute and appoint my two sons, Luther Allen and Marvin Allen, executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made.

JAMES P. ALLEN, one of eight sons born to Peter Allen and Roena Pearce, was born in Onondaga County, New York on 21 October 1810. He died on 13 September 1840 in Burr Oak, Michigan.
At the time of his father's death in 1836 he, along with brothers Daniel and Norman, was living in Michigan.
Records of the Washtinaw County Court state that he and his bride, Maria Caroline Macy, the daughter of Robert R. Macy and Anna Barnard. were living in Ypsilanti, MI when they married. Maria was born in 1818 at Kip's Bay, New York. The wedding took place at Ypsilanti on 11 October 1838. The marriage was a short one, lasting only two years When James died at Burr Oak, Michigan in 1840 he was five weeks short of age 30 years. We have no information about children. On 16 November 1843 Maria married Simeon Rowley. A witness at that wedding was Robert D. Macy, brother of the bride.

Daniel R. Allen was born in Fabius, Onondaga County, NY. He was one of eight sons born to Peter Allen and Roena Pearce / Pierce. The only information we have about him is gleaned from the will of his father, Peter Allen. In 1836, the year his father died, Daniel was living in Michigan. The will, drafted that same year, stated that Daniel was not yet 21 years old, implying that he was the youngest of the brothers. Peter, his father, who had always lived in Fabius, died in Michigan. Presumably he was being cared for during his last illness by Daniel or one of his brothers.

We know nothing about him except that he was over 21 years old and was living in Michigan in 1836, the same year that his father's will was drawn. His father died in Michigan in 1836, presumably at the home of either Norman, James or Daniel.

Peter Allen Jr. born in 1796, died in 1829. Peter was probably the oldest of eight sons born to Peter Allen and Roena Pearce / Pierce. He was born in Fabius, Onondaga County, NY in 1796 and died in Cattaraugus County, NY in 1829. He moved to Cattaraugus county as a young man. He married and had the following children: Asahel, Roena, Harriet, Dan and John. Peter died on 30 December 1829 and is buried in the Cottage Cemetery in Cattaraugus County. We have no information about his wife or his surviving children.

LUTHER ALLEN 1798-1847
Luther Allen was probably the second of eight sons born to Peter Allen and Roena Pearce / Pierce. He was born in Fabius, Onondaga County, NY. in 1798.
Luther was a 20 years old when he and his brother, Peter, came to Dayton Township, Cattaraugus County, NY in 1818. Luther settled in lot 29 and returned to Onondaga County where he married Huldah Benedict. He brought her and their few belongings to Dayton in an ox drawn sledge since the trip was made in the winter. After living in the country for a few years they moved into town. In 1834 he put up the first frame house in the town where the village of Dayton now stands. Luther and Huldah had two children, Lucinda Allen in 1824 and Norman Milton Allen in 1828. Huldah died in 1837. Luther married Lois Tuthill in 1842. They had one child, Luther Allen Jr. They later moved to Gowanda where Luther died in February 1847. His second wife died there in 1852.
Luther Allen was a man of superior business ability, an elegant writer and very competent to draft such papers as were needed to be drafted by the early settlers. He held the position of Justice of the Peace for a number of years when the towns of Dayton and Persia were included in the town of Perrysburg and for a number of years after the town of Dayton became a separate township. He was also a land surveyor and, in his early years, a teacher in the public schools.
He was a man of fine personal appearance with keen piercing black eyes, erect as an arrow, six feet in height and finely proportioned, with a pleasing manner.
While living in the town of Dayton he was elected three times as Supervisor, in spite of the fact that nearly the whole town was opposed to him in politics. Mr. Allen and Ralph Johnson were the only Democrats who ever had the honor to represent the town of Dayton on the Board of Supervisors. Mr. Allen was a highly useful member of the community in which he lived and which was composed of the pioneers of the town of Dayton. He transacted nearly all of the legal business. They had but little litigation and such differences as arose between them he settled in a manner generally satisfactory to all parties concerned. He seemed to live for the good he could do for others and there was no man who knew him but mourned his early death as a personal loss.

Marvin Allen, son of Peter Allen and Roena Pearce, was born in Fabius, Onondaga County, NY on 1 November 1800.
He must have been a leader in the family because, In 1836, he submitted the will of his father for probate. He provided much family information at the time that he Submitted the will. In 1836 he was living in Canandaigua, Ontario County, NY. The IGI records of the LDS shows that he married Mary Gardner in about 1837. Perhaps his share of the estate gave him the resources to marry. The marriage took place in Farmington, NY, only a few miles north of Canandaigua.

ELISHA ALLEN
Born in Fabius, Onondaga County, NY in 1801
Died 1831 in Cortland County, New York.
We have only scant information on Elisha Allen. He died before the birth of his only child, James Henry Allen, who was born in October 1831. Allen research shows Allens in the USA in the mid 1500s, and census records from the 1600s show many with our name. We know that Elisha married Mercy Benedict on
2 February 1831.
Mercy was the daughter of Enoch Benedict who was of the same generation as Peter Allen, father of Elisha. Enoch also moved to Fabius from Connecticut.
Newton Benedict b 1857, son of George b 1820 related that Gilbert, Enoch and Walter were the first Benedicts to come to Fabius. "they built a wooden structure near a spring that still exists on the Pompey Center Road near the Blocktown Cemetery. They stored cabbage and vegetables in the cellar that they dug under the building and traded things with the Indians so they could get horses to go back to Connecticut. The next year they came back with their families and the building had been burned down."
At any rate, Elisha and Mercy met and married in 1831, likely with much hope for the future and a lot of ambition. They moved to Cortland County where they probably took up claims for the purpose of farming. Alas, after only a few months of marriage Elisha lost his life - probably by accident. His young widow, pregnant, stricken by the loss of her husband, without means of support, had to rely on family members for help. The 1850 Federal Census of Cattaraugus County shows her living there with the Heman Merrill family.
Her son, James Henry Allen, had recently moved to Woodcock Twp,, Crawford County, PA where he took up a claim on land adjacent to his aunt, Susan (Benedict] VanMarter. In the Federal Census of 1860 Mercy is listed as living there with her son James and wife, Lucia (Robbins}. Mercy does not appear on the 1870 Census and probably had died by that time.

Asahel Allen, son of Peter Allen and Roena Pearce was born in Fabius, Onondaga County, New York on 11 May 1802. He died on 21 January 1858 at Cottage, Cattaraugus County, NY.
He came to Dayton, NY in 1820, when he was 18 years old, and bought land from the Holland Land Company for $3.00 per acre. He finally moved to Cottage where he died in 1858. His wife, Sally Ann Benedict, whom he married in 1823, daughter of Jonathon Benedict of his native county died 22 October 1847. Their children were Jonathon B., Peter R., Harlow, Lucy M., Laura J., Eliza L., Mary C., James M., George M., and Ellen M. Sally died in 1847.
In 1848 he married Julia Ann Shaw. Asahel and Julia had three children, Annette Cordelia, Newton Asahel and Julia Ann. Wife Julia died in 1853.
We assume that Asahel engaged in farming, at least part time, but have no confirmation of this.
Neither do we have information on his descendants and would welcome any communication about them.

In the cemetery at Mound City, SD stood a badly weathered gravestone with the name James Henry Allen inscribed. The dates of birth and death were there also. In the records of Lillian Allen we found a gravestone rubbing. The text is hard to decipher but reads as follows:

The search for James Henry is unending. We have no record of his place of birth except that it was in New York. We find his name in the federal census of Crawford County, PA of 1850. In that census he is listed as being a butcher. In the census of 1880 he is listed as a farmer age 48. In that census his wife Lucia age 45 and seven children are listed:
Mary age 21, John age 19, Albert age 17, Harry age 12, Frank age 11, Rolland age 4, and Anna age 1. The parents of both James and Lucia were also born in New York. Our records indicate that James' father, Elisha, was born in Cattaragus County, NY. Apparently he died an accidental death before the birth of his only child. Federal census records verify that James was residing in Crawford County, PA when he was about 19 years old. Census records also indicate that mother, Electa Benedict Allen, lived with James and his wife and children. At any rate, he must have changed occupations from butcher to farmer. In 1882 the records show that he purchased two parcels of land in Crawford County. It seems reasonable to infer that his holdings would not be sufficient to provide employment for James and his five sons. In 1885 the Dakota Territory was opened up for homesteading. With the exception of son John the whole family moved to what is now Campbell County, SD. We have no idea as to why Campbell County was chosen. It was 100 miles from the end of the rail road at Aberdeen. The move to SD and the early years are well described by daughter Anna Loy. James was recognized as a man of wisdom and learning as he was appointed justice of the peace. His daughter Anna writes that many trials were held in their home. The family settled on a claim SW of Mound City. Neighbors included family members Charles and Martha Naomi Robbins Stuart, Ed Robbins, Myron and Mary Allen Kimmy. Life was difficult but the family persisted. In 1888 tragedy struck. While mother Lucia was visiting in Pennsylvania James Henry became acutely ill with influenza and died after only a three day illness. This was such a shock that Lucia took her three youngest children Frank, Rolland and Anna back to Pennsylvania where they stayed for five years. Lucia still owned the farm there. After five years they moved back to SD where they stayed until 1901. In that year daughter Mary with husband Myron, sons Frank and Rolland and Lucia moved to Alberta, Canada. Frank married there, but by 1806 the health of his wife necessitated a move to Oregon. Lucia moved with them and lived with Frank and wife Mabel until her death in 1910 at age 76. During the last few years of her life she was very confused. According to grand-daughter Clara Allen Speerstra she was a very loving and devout woman who demonstrated great courage and perseverence in spite of great tragedy and hardship.

Mary Electa was the third child born to James Henry Allen and Lucia Elila Robbins. She was born in Meadville, PA, married Myron Kimmy in 1883, and moved to Campbell county in 1885 where they filed claims and farmed. Three children were born to this couple: George Samuel in 1888, Alice Lucia in 1890, and Evalyn Ella in 1898. In 1901 they, along with brothers Rolla and Frank Allen moved to Alberta where they began wheat farming. Later on Myron worked in lumber mills. Myron died in 1923 in Portland, Oregon. Mary died three years later in Alberta. She was buried in Lakedell, AB at the Hegge Cemetery.

"John E. Allen" was the fourth child and the first son born to James Henry Allen and Lucia Elila Robbins. He lived his entire life in Meadville, Pa. When he was 25 the family moved to Campbell County, SD to homestead. John seems to have been a very independent person, and was the only one of the eight siblings to stay in Meadville. He married Emma McFadden. To this union four children were born. He appears to have been a successful business man. He sold real estate for a time, and then bought and sold hides and furs. Apparently his fur buying extended into Canada. Later on he bought land in the Brownsville, Texas area. John and his wife were separated in the early 1920s, and his wife died in about 1924. In about 1927 he moved in with his daughter and son in law, Adah and Roscoe Snedeker. They had a four room house with two rooms down stairs and two bedrooms upstairs. After a couple of years of enduring such crowded quarters he constructed an addition to that house which was nearly identical to the original thus doubling its size. He lived in harmony with that family for the last ten years of his life. That move was very fortuitous for the Snedekers. Roscoe was in the business of jewelry repair. This was not very profitable, and was further impacted by the onset of the great depression in 1929. The assistance given by John was was critical to their survival. Roscoe died in 1931 which added to the burden of daughter Adah. In the last two months of his life John was very ill. His daughter was in nearly constant attendance during that period. His two sons Fred and Andrew were living in Wisconsin and son Trace was away much of the time working on the rail road. His grand children describe him as being a kindly person who said very little. As far as we know he never discussed his parents or other family members. Photographs show him with an expression of determination and self reliance. His one extravagance seemed to be purchasing new cars at frequent intervals.

Frank was the eighth of ten children born to James Henry Allen and Lucia Elila Robbins. He was born in Meadville, PA. When he was 14 years old the family moved to Mound City, Campbell County, SD to homestead. He helped on the farm for three years at which time his father died suddenly of Influenza. His mother took him back to Pennsylvania for a few years then returned to South Dakota. Frank and his brother Rolla operated a butcher shop for a time in Selby, SD - about 15 miles south of Mound City. Frank told his daughter that the dust would be so thick on the road to and from the town of Selby that they could not see ahead of them. When hauling grain he had to be careful for fear that he would not see a team coming from the other direction. In 1901 the family heard about great opportunities in Alberta, Canada. Land was there for the taking, and there was great money to be made in wheat farming. Frank, along with his brother Rolla and brother in law Myron Kimmy, made the trip to the Ponoka-Chesterwold area of Alberta where they selected claims. Later they sent for Rolla's wife Lena, Mary Kimmy, and mother Lucia.
In 1906, at age 35, Frank married Mabel Clair Hayner the daughter of his neighbor. The next year their first child was born, and shortly thereafter the family along with mother Lucia moved to Portland, Oregon.
That first summer Frank and Mabel worked picking hops. After the hop season the family moved to Canby, Oregon which is about 30 miles south of Portland. Frank opened a butcher shop there. Grandmother Lucia accompanied them and lived with the family until her death in 1910. Six more children were born to Frank and Mabel. The last one in 1917. Two of them died in infancy. Frank was a good worker and a very kind man. However he had been told by a doctor that he had a "leakage of the heart," and that he had to have a drink of whiskey every day. Sadly, Frank began to enjoy that drink, and before long he became a severe alcoholic. About 1923 Mabel divorced Frank because of the drinking. Frank had to give up the butcher shop and later worked as a lumberjack and then in a floral nursery. He lived with a daughter after his retirement until his death at age 75. A tragic end for a fine man.

Rolland was the 9th of ten children born to James Henry Allen and Lucia Elila Robbins in Meadville, PA. When he was only 9 years old the family moved to Mound City, Campbell County, South Dakota to take up homesteads. For financial reasons father James Henry accompanied the boys in boxcars. It was 100 miles from the end of the rail road tracks. The adults walked. We are not told how the women and children made the trip. The family farmed in South Dakota. In addition to farming Rolla and brother Frank Allen operated a butcher shop in Selby, SD for a time. The men enjoyed baseball and Rolla played catcher on the team. In 1901 Rolland married Madelyn (Lena) Heinze. Very shortly thereafter Rolla and Lena, brother Frank Allen, sister Mary and her husband Myron Kimmy, plus their mother Lucia Allen decided to move to Canada to take up wheat farming. Father James had died in 1888 from influenza. The families took up homesteads in the Chesterwold, Alberta area. Rolla worked as a logger and drove mail twice weekly in addition to his wheat farming. During their time in Canada three children were born. Clara, the eldest, was the first white child born in the Pigeon Creek district. Rolla was a skilled hunter and kept the table well supplied with meat. A herd of ten cows supplied plenty of milk, cream, and beef. The cream was sold and the skim milk used to feed the calves and pigs. The family stayed in Alberta until 1920 at which time they moved to Tacoma, WA. Rolla worked for the Wheeler-Osgood Lumber Company until his death in 1937 at age 61. Death was caused by a fall while at work. The long spout of an oil can pierced his eye and entered his brain. After this it became law that all oil cans had to be made with curved down ends.
